Professor Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed received his PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire, United States of America. He has been a lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) since 1993, and currently he is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research & Innovation and also the Director of sains@usm campus.

Professor Abdul Rahman is an active researcher in the School of Chemical Engineering. His research interests span the areas of reaction engineering and catalysis, air pollution, wastewater treatment, fuel technology and nanotechnology. He has received more than 80 research grants from various national/international organisations amounting to a total of RM 23 million. He has published more than 400 research papers in international/national journals and conference proceedings with Scopus bibliographic database recorded H–Index of 59 and total citation of 11276 (as of May, 2018).

His collaboration with researchers from Osaka University (Japan), Nagaoka University of Technology (Japan) and the University of Lorraine (France) has broadened his research influence. He is keen in mentoring Masters and PhD students with 44 of them have graduated under his supervision. As a result of his excellent research achievements, he has received more than 60 national/international awards, honours and recognitions, such as Malaysia’s Rising Star 2015, Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM) 2012 and Malaysia Toray Science Foundation 2012.

Apart from his extensive research work, Professor Abdul Rahman has been instrumental in the success of the University’s cooperation and partnership with the industry. His active involvement in the Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology Center (CREST) has seen a boost in collaborative R&D projects between USM and industry. He has also played an important role in coordinating strategic collaborative programmes between USM with Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA), Khazanah Nasional, Talent Corporation and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA).

At the national level, Professor Abdul Rahman serves as the Technical Advisor for the Public Private Research Network initiative under the Ministry of Higher Education. Prof. Abdul Rahman is also a fellow of the Academy Sciences of Malaysia (ASM) and a Field Expert for Nanotechnology Area of the ASM Working Group on Emerging Science, Engineering and Technology (ESET).
